Am scris o poveste pentru un DeviantART contest and I thought of sharing :D. E în engleză, dar mi-e lene să o traduc. Enjoy!Remember, remember the 5th of November… for today they split and today they reunite…
5th November 1991: 1st one.
“From the cradle, one can understand the world as it is. I might not be old enough to walk and speak, but I am old enough to sense, to see what surrounds me. And it’s so cold in this little room of ours. Margaret, my step mother, a woman in her 50s’, is buried in problems and debts, yet she shows me so much affection and love… but I’m still cold, it’s so cold this time of the year. And there’s nothing she can do. I wish I could help her… but I’m too young.”
“I woke up today as Mom entered the room, bent over my cradle and kissed my cheek. She smiled. Today it’s my first birthday and it feels so good to know that I made it through my first year of life. Heh, many years still to come. My parents threw a mini-party downstairs with family, friends and their babies. They all want to greet me and sing happy birthday. I am so happy to be surrounded by these amazing people and feel all the love around me. Oh! And look at all these presents: dolls, teddy bears, toy cars and maaany other unwrapped gifts. But why do I feel something’s missing…? I feel so cold inside.
5th November 1995: 5th one.
“I.. can’t believe it. My dreams, hopes and little whiplashes of happiness are burning down along with our tiny home. I look at the flames touching the morning sky and the ashes we once used to call home. I have tears in my eyes. Margaret is holding me tightly and she is crying too. Thank you, life… wonderful birthday present, thank you.”
“I.. can’t believe it. My dreams and hopes finally came true! Today I’m going to meet all of my heroes: Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and fairy princesses. I feel like I’m the luckiest little girl in the world. Thank you, Mom and Dad for this wonderful birthday present, thank you very much, Disneyland, here I come! But… why do I still feel there is something… someone missing? Why is there a cloud shadowing my happiness?
5th November 1997: 7th one.
“It’s been two months since I started school. I don’t like school: all the kids are mocking me because of my poor clothes. Today is a rainy day and I’m walking back home. We’re now living on the 4th floor of a flat. It’s not a big deal, but we couldn’t afford more. I am sad. I wonder where my real parents really are and why did they abandon me? I am quite jealous when I see the other kids being picked up by their parents. Me… I walk alone and it’s raining and it’s cold. I… wish for a change. But… I cannot afford to dream either. “
“It is my first year of school and I already feel like I’m growing up! I really like it. For the first time in my life I have responsibilities, I finally feel like I’m important. I’m gonna celebrate my birthday at school with my friends. Mom and Dad will drop by at 11 o’clock and bring cake and cookies. We’re gonna have so much fun! Outside it rains with raindrops, here it rains with joy. But suddenly… why do I feel empty again?”
5th November 2000: 10th one.
“Every year my birthday got worse and worse. But this one… this one is definitely the worst. I have no words to describe my feelings. Have you ever experienced loss? Then you know how a 10 year old girl felt when she lost her only friend, the one who always gave her comfort and protection. I stand alone in the quiet cemetery as the few people who have been present go to their homes. Tears are already dry and I wonder what have I done to be treated this way? Why does life hate me? What am I going to do now, as my only guardian is gone? I, alone, facing the big cruel world… Goodbye, Margaret, I promise you I will find my way.”
“Well, I haven’t started the day so well, as I expected. But I’m good, really. This morning my parents decided it is time for me to know the truth: they sat down and explained to me that I was, oh well, adopted. They don’t know much about my real parents, except for the fact my mother was 17 when she gave birth. My first reaction was to yell at my step parents and break anything in the house, but then I realized that everything was fine. Really. They have been a great pair of parents so far and I am truly thankful they chose me to be their daughter. On the other hand, I’ll have a few friends over and throw a pajama party. We will eat pizza, watch movies, talk about boys and do a load of other fun stuff. I still have that “birthday sickness”, though, and it just won’t go away…
5th November 2004: 14th one.
“It has already been 4 years since Margaret passed away. My life hasn’t changed much since then. I live alone, mostly. However, the neighbours next door are helping me from time to time with food, clothes and money. It’s hard. I think that in my 14 years of life I’ve been through much more than other people face in 30 years ! I’m now walking aimlessly around the park and my mind is messy. When will this all end?”
“Well, since Halloween has been a few days ago, I decided to throw a masquerade on my birthday! My parents rent a dancefloor and I invited so many people: the basketball team is going to be there and all the nice guys in the school. And, more important, I invited David Stuart, the boy I have a big crush on! I think this night is going to be ours. Oh, I will dress like Elizabeth Swann from The Pirates of The Caribbean. I just… feel like this party has a lot in common with my life, because I feel like I’m part of a masquerade with something big missing…”

“I’m sixteen and I have my first job. I’m working as a fast-food waiter 3 nights a week. Tonight is one of these nights. I don’t earn much, since it is a part-time job, but the little money I gain help me survive. It is usually so crowded and I don’t really have time to sit down for 5 minutes. I usually get home so tired, so sometimes I skip school and my grades are lower. Yes, sweet sixteen and no one to even know that. What’s more, an hour ago a few kids from school came here to order pizza and they laughed so much when they saw me. I’m used to it, but I hope it will end one day.”
“Sweet sixteen! I have been waiting for it my entire life! So tonight I’m going to hit the town with David and a few other friends to celebrate not-so-sweet-and-innocent-sixteen. If we’re lucky we will find some nice bartenders who will give us alcohol or other illegal… sweets. My life is perfect: I have a boyfriend who loves me, the greatest parents one could ever had and the coolest buds to hang out with. I still… don’t have a best friend. Why is that?”
5th November 2008: 18th one.
“For the first time in my life I truly feel the bitterness of being poor. There is this metal band that’s going to have a gig in our town tonight. And… I really can’t go. The ticket is expensive for me, but I would have loved to go, for they’re my all-time favorite. I’m at the venue of the concert and watch the other enthusiastic fans waiting to enter. Well, I hope they will have a great time. This is perhaps my single wish that is going to come true”
“This is absolutely fantastic! I have been waiting for this day a lot! My favorite band it’s going to play tonight at the Liberty Arena. On my birthday! I am so excited and can’t wait to hear the first notes live! Nothing ever compares with seeing your favorites in concert. My life as a grown up started beautifully! I feel so sorry, though, for the fans that aren’t able to come. If I could… I would really help them.”

“I’m at last an adult… legally. I still have that job at the fast-food restaurant, where I’m now working everyday except Saturdays and Sundays. My payment is bigger, but still not enough. I haven’t decided yet what to do with my life. I’ve had a few boyfriends, and some acquaintances, but I have never had a good friend. I’m now walking on the quiet streets and watch the leaves slowly dying and touching the ground. It’s a beautiful scenery, sometimes I feel like I… understand the dying leaves. There’s nobody on the streets, except for a young woman with black hair, beautiful green eyes….”
“… and a perfect-shaped face. A bit taller than me, but still I stare in wonder. Can this be possible? For the first time in my life, I don’t feel that emptiness inside of me, for the first time in my life I feel warmth. I am in my last year of college, I have a house of my own and the life many people would envy. But I never felt so fulfilled until now. She saw me, too. Her green eyes just like mine look at me like I’m some kind of ghost. I feel a tear on my cheek and I see a tear on hers.”

“And here we are, the moment both of us have been waiting for. Ever since we met 4 years ago, we have been together all the time. She introduced me to her parents who were more than happy to meet me. They said that if they knew Sarah had a twin sister they would have adopted me too. I’m now staying with her and I’m in my first college year. We work together at her… our dad’s company and the change I have been waiting for happened, at last. We are now on the doorsteps and we look at each other and…
“…smile. I am so happy I found her. She is what has been missing all along: my twin sister, my best friend, my twin soul. We finally found our real parents and we’re going to celebrate our 25th birthday together, like a real family. I am glad that they remained together after their 17 year-old mistake, and eventually married. Now, Simone and I have a little brother! I’m now at the dinner table with Mom, Dad, my parents, David and my amazing sister, Simone. I have everything I could ask for.”
